jamaica-election-results-20111(1) The PNP's margin of victory is exactly 2:1 (42 to 21 seats). First landslide of the 21st century.


(2) The PNP is the first party to win under the expanded 63 constituency seats. It won two of the three new seats.

 

(3) The PNP enjoyed an islandwide victory. It won more seats (11) or the same number (3) as its opponents in all Parishes. It did not lose any Parish.

 

(4) Portia Simpson Miller is the first female leader to serve a first and elected to a second term.

 

(5) Portia Simpson Miller joins all PNP Prime Ministers to serve at least two terms.

 

(6) 80% of PNP female candidates (4 of 5) won. Two were first time candidates.

 

(7) The PNP maintains its dominance of Kingston constituencies. It has never lost Kingston. Only once (1980) did it tie (2:2).

 

(8) The PNP regains its dominance of St. Andrew by 8 for and 4 against. It only lost St. Andrew in 1944, 1980, 2002 and 2007. It won St. Andrew 11 times.

 

(9) It regains Norman Manley's East St. Andrew seat through Andre Hylton

 

(10) The candidate with the most votes is Roger Clarke (11,558).

 

(11) The biggest margin of victory was enjoyed by Portia Simpson Miller with 10, 920 to 560 (followed by Omar Davies 9,667 to 858. Combined, they won 20, 587 to the JLPs 1,418).

 

(12) Seventeen first time candidates won and 18 (28%) PNP candidates won for the first time providing a healthy turnover and refreshment rate. At this rate there would be a 100% turnover about every three and a half terms.

 

(13) None of the PNP's 22 incumbents who contested lost. Some incumbents retired (Dean Peart); changed parties (Sharon Hay-Webster) or were de-selected (Kern Spencer)

 

(14) Damion Crawford became the first Rastafarian to win a seat to Parliament

 

(15) The second father and son team, Peter and Mikael Phillips, now sit in Parliament together following Norman and Michael Manley in 1967/68

 

(16) The most dominant PNP corridors are:

Hanover, Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Manchester, 11 seats to 2

Kingston to St. Andrew (East, West and South), 9 seats to 2

St. Mary to St. Ann, 7 seats to 1

 

(17) There are three complete PNP Parishes – Hanover, St. Mary and Westmoreland

 

(18) The results continue the PNP's dominance in general elections since 1944 winning 9 and losing 6 contested elections; and winning five of the last six. At the end of this term in 2016, the PNP will have served for 23 years to the JLP's four since 1989.

 

(19) Between 2007 and 2011 Jamaica held the most number of by-elections during any term – 6 because of the dual citizenship issues of some JLP candidates. The PNP lost or did not contest these by-elections. However, it won two of those seats in the general elections.

 

(20) One MP crossed the floor from the PNP to the JLP for the elections, doing so over her dual citizenship status – Sharon Hay-Webster. She lost her seat to the PNP (Denise Daley)
