The Opposition People's National Party is calling on Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who has portfolio responsibility for the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), to disclose all land and property acquisitions by the UDC since the new administration took office in September of 2007.
Opposition Spokesperson on Investment and Development, Ian Hayles said "I am particularly concerned about a transaction involving the acquisition and lease of lands and properties in Ferry, St. Catherine and what appears to be a lack of transparency in that deal."
The Opposition's call comes against the background of the firing of the entire Board of the UDC, for which no explanation has been provided to date. Mr. Hayles questioned whether the firing has anything to do with some of these deals in question.
The Opposition has been concerned about the operations of the UDC for some time now. Mr. Hayles highlighted the sudden and abrupt resignation of the then chairman of the Montego Bay Freeport Limited, a subsidiary of the UDC, Mr. Anthony Lindo earlier this year. Reports surfaced that Mr. Lindo's resignation was related to a land transaction that was not handled appropriately. At the time, no official explanation was given for Mr. Lindo's resignation.
Mr. Hayles said "I am calling on the Prime Minister to come clean with the country and tell us what the true state of affairs are at the UDC. It is simply not good enough to appoint a new Board without explaining why the previous one was dismissed."
