The authorities have finally broken their silence on the reason(s) for the continuing free fallout at the Attorney General's Chambers under the new administration.

According to the Attorney General and the Solicitor General, the haemorrhaging has nothing to do with the posture that has been adopted by the Attorney General. They refrained from giving any reason for the galloping and unfortunate actual and threatened resignations, even though they ought to be aware of the reason or reasons. So, the public is left to speculate as to what to make of the representations that they have put forward.

The Leader of the Opposition, in her contribution to the budget debate on April 17, this year, welcomed an undertaking that had reportedly been given by the Prime Minister some time before for a review to be conducted of the worrisome happenings at the Attorney General's Chambers.

Opposition Spokesman on Justice, A.J. Nicholson said "Nothing has since been heard of this promised review, and the slide continues. This is clearly an untenable situation in the office in which the legal and constitutional advice that is given to government ministries, departments and agencies is anchored."

If the urgings of the Opposition Leader, some two months ago, for the Prime Minister to move speedily to have that promised review conducted, have not been acted upon, then how is the public to regard the administration's approach to governance in this country?

For, as the Leader of the Opposition observed in Parliament in April: "Let me make it abundantly clear, however, that the Opposition views this matter with the utmost seriousness. We will not accept or respect any review finding that either evades or obscures the issue of whether there has been unlawful departure from basic constitutional principles and what is needed to prevent any repetition in the future".
