Councillor for the Vineyard Town Division, Andrew Swaby is expressing concern at the modus operandi of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) in carrying out work in communities within the Division. While acknowledging that the work carried out has beautified the communities, Councillor Swaby is concerned at the manner in which persons are being selected to do the work.

Councillor Swaby said "I am concerned that tensions are being created when outsiders and persons from other communities are brought in to do work, where there exists persons within the community to perform these tasks."

Currently, work is being done in Vineyard Town by persons from the lower Mountain View Belt (Jacques Road, Goodridge Lane and Back Bush)

A number of residents in the communities where work is being carried out have expressed disgust that they are being overlooked and not employed on these work sites. The persons carrying out the work have already done work in their own communities.

In the case of work in the McGregor Gully, the Member of Parliament, Maxine Henry-Wilson had to intervene to ensure that persons from the area were employed by the NSWMA. Based on that intervention it was assumed that going forward there would have been consultation with the elected representatives. Councillor Swaby is calling for consultations with the elected representatives before further work is carried out.
