The Peoples National Party notes recent media reports regarding Mrs. Sharon Hay Webster, Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Central.

Mrs. Hay Webster was born in the United States of America and is a Jamaican citizen.

The People's National Party has always upheld and respected the laws and the Constitution of Jamaica. Currently, there are Constitutional cases before the Jamaican courts that deal with Members of Parliament having pledged allegiance to foreign powers under section 46 of the Constitution.

The outcomes of these cases will be significant to the future of Jamaica's Parliamentary system and the Party will take them into account to help in reviewing Mrs. Hay Webster's status as an MP representing this Party.

The initial legal advice received on Mrs. Hay Webster's status indicated that she was eligible to sit in the House of Representatives. However, in light of the Chief Justices recent ruling in the Dabdoub vs Vaz case, an updated legal opinion is being sought on the matter.

As the situation currently exists the seat for St Catherine South Central is not vacant.
