Prime Minister and PNP President Portia Simpson-Miller poked another hole in the JLP bag of promises on Saturday when she forced Opposition Leader, Bruce Golding to declare how his campaign promises amounting to over $60 billion will be funded.
Mrs Simpson- Miller who was debating the opposition Leader in the Jamaica Debating Commission's series of national debate on televison did admirably as she fielded questions from the panel of journalists. She reiteriated the PNP promises which she said were "not emply" promises, but ones that were achievable. Mr. Golding on the other hand in answer to the question of funding said he would take money from the budget , but could not give any commitment that there would be not increases in taxes to fund the promises. The two leaders battled for 90 minutes during which Party Leader Portia Simpson Miller spoke of the many successes of the Government over the past 18 years in answer to Mr. Golding's repeated attack on the party's performance. On the question of trust, JLP leader seems to have come prepared to answer to this charge which has dogged him for some time, He declared that he had left the JLP because of "differences in principles" while not stating what those "differences" were. In her closing statement a confident Prime Minister called on Jamaicans not to imbibe the negatives that the Government has done nothing in its years in offfice, but to look at where they were personally 18 years ago and where they are now , She urged Jamaicans to give her the mandate and trust her to keep her word.. She highlighted education, health care and family life as the major planks on which she will build the country. |
