Kingston is buzzing with activities mainly among supporters and organizers of the People’s National Party who are in the final stages of preparation for a massive campaign rally in Half Way Tree where it is expected that Party President, Portia Simpson Miller will announce the date for the next general elections.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller will show the nation her 59 candidates who will along with herself request from voters their granting of her mandate to carry out her policy agenda for next five years, and also to allow for people at the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder to be comfortable that they have one of their own sitting on the throne at Jamaica House.
The Party President, who is the first person of her gender to occupy such a position since the granting of the freedom of the majority to cast their ballot for a democratic government since 1944, has been strong in her point ever since her ascension to the lofty political position that “it is you term, the people’s term.”
The Prime Minister is willing to follow the trail of her faithful Party workers in “flying the gate” politically. Jamaica is not governed by a fixed election date but instead the calling of an election is constitutionally due at the end of the term of office of the ruling political Party, or three months after given that the Governor General grants the favor of three months extension. The Prime Minister also has the powers to call a general election long before the tenure of office of the government expires.
Ever since the use of political polls as the snap shot of knowing political support beginning the efforts of the late pollster of high academic standing Carl Stone, political organizers have been very wary about the calling of an election against the background of poll results.
Current poll results, have been extreemingly supportive of Portia Simpson Miller. In fact, almost all the local national polls show her leading by far. Don Anderson’s latest polls have her in the point standing with 30.7 per cent of respondents in her support and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding trailing at 25.6 per cent in favour of him.
“That is exactly why, while we have every respect for the work of pollsters, we are more confident about the success of our ground work which in instances either show us where we are near or far,” a Party source said, adding that “we are pretty sure that we are now right on top with the results of our policy aims and objectives.”
The Party President has been given the wholesome chance to steer the ship of state and the party as she is “ultimately in change.”
This glorious event and the crowds which are now converging along with the candidates in Half Way Tree, will allow all to see that it is really Portia Simpson Miller’s time for the electoral victory.
