Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has set nomination day for 7th August 2007, and Election Day for 27th August 2007.
After the trumpet sounded, snippets of "fly the gate" echoed from the gigantic speaker boxes and the crowd shouting enthusiastically, Party Leader and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller asked the crowd if they were ready for her to "fly the gate" [open the gate for the election race in local talk]. After the crowd replied in the affirmative, with her keys in hand, she declared that Nomination Day will be on August 7, 2007, and the General Election Day will be August 27, 2007.
The Prime Minister said that out of respect for our ancestors and the Jamaican people, she would not disturb the Emancipation Day and Independence Day holidays set for August 1 and 6 respectively. Instead, she asked that all churches and faith-based organizations join in a national period of prayer and fasting for the nation on August 4 and 5.
The massive crowd clad mostly in yellow or orange, was the largest political crowd every at a political rally.
