PNP HQ

Good afternoon.  I want to thank you for being here.

As you are all aware, a General Election is constitutionally due by October of this year. On the ground the People's National Party continues to go through the various stages, related to ensuring that we win the General Election, whenever the Prime Minister, The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller sets the date.

The PNP has put its sixty constituency candidates in place and in each constituency, the candidates are working tirelessly to make sure that their organizations are properly oiled and fully operational.

As a Party, we are aware that the readiness and effectiveness of the organizational structure on the ground, and at the constituency level, is of utmost importance.  We have been putting our workers in place, conducting canvasses and have been taking our message of achievements and future plans, door to door.

We are firmly convinced that we are on the right track, as the Party's polices, principles and practices have been successful in the social and economic development of our people across the length and breadth of Jamaica.

As a political organization, a primary function of ours, is to win and retain state power.  We are taking all the necessary steps to ensure that all the I's have been dotted and the T's crossed.  There is still some work to be done, but we are well down the wicket to yet another electoral victory.

The media would be aware that the Party held two days of activities at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston last weekend, to among other things, on the Saturday, receive reports from constituencies, showing their election readiness.

On Sunday the Party held its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at which the Director of Elections made a presentation and fielded questions from comrades relating to the voters list and other electoral matters.

Party President, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller gave the keynote address to the NEC and charged all in attendance not to be sidetracked. You know, sometimes things happen or are done and they turn out to be wrong. The adult thing to do is to step up to the plate. To admit any errors and then move forward.

A few days ago some poll results were aired by Nationwide News Network's evening news, indicating that while the PNP was ahead nationally, on the ground, constituency by constituency, the results showed the main opposition either in strong contention or ahead of the PNP.

Nationwide presented this as the work of our pollster Bill Johnson. Mr. Johnson has rejected what was presented as his work and the Campaign Director has confirmed this information. The PNP states categorically  that it is not in receipt of any such report and poll result.

Nationwide News Network owes the country an explanation.

It is to be noted that among the constituencies purported to have bee polled, in some cases the Party has so far not conducted a poll.  This needs to be explained.

This matter is of great concern and we have been in contact with our lawyers and will have discussions with the Broadcasting Commission and the police about what appears to be an act of fraud.

It is a matter of great concern and we have been in contact with our lawyers and will have discussions with that Commission and the police about what appears to be an act of fraud.

On another issue, we have received, with concern and deep regret, information about acts of violence which have caused the loss of life, injury and property damage.

As a Party we do not in any way condone violence. We believe in the freedom of political choice and the rule of law.

We are appealing for the ongoing election campaign to be conducted in an atmosphere of peace and civility, for us all to remain calm and focused on our respective goals but at the same time respecting the rights of others.
